What is abrasive blasting?

Sandblasting, also known as abrasive blasting, is the process of removing contaminants, rust, paint, or other unwanted layers from a material's surface using a stream of abrasive material propelled at high pressure. This process is carried out in special booths or chambers that provide controlled working conditions.

Stages of the steel grit blasting process:

Surface preparation:

Pre-cleaning: Before blasting, the surface must be free of grease, oil, and other chemical contaminants. Appropriate solvents or cleaning agents are often used for this purpose.

Abrasive selection:

Type of abrasive: Choosing the right abrasive material is crucial. This can include steel shot, glass beads, copper slag, corundum, or other materials. The choice depends on the type of material being treated and the desired end result.
Particle size: The size of the abrasive particles affects the aggressiveness of the treatment and the surface texture.

Machine settings:

Blast pressure: Adjusting the pressure is essential to achieve the appropriate cleaning intensity without damaging the base material.
Nozzle angle and distance: Proper adjustment of the nozzle angle and distance to the surface ensures even cleaning.
Blasting process:

Blasting operation: The operator directs the stream of abrasive onto the surface, striving to achieve even and thorough cleaning of the entire area. This process can be automatic (using robots) or manual.

Quality control:

Visual inspection: After blasting, the surface is inspected for the presence of residual contaminants or unreached areas.
Roughness measurement: Specialized measuring tools are used to check the surface roughness. Roughness values are often specified in Qualisteelcoat technical specifications.
Manual or machine oscillating grinding: After blasting, the next process is grinding, which involves leveling the surface and eliminating any unevenness or imperfections from previous stages.

Surface protection:

Dust removal and removal of abrasive residue: After treatment, the surface is thoroughly dusted and cleaned to remove abrasive residue.
Corrosion protection: Depending on the time elapsed until the application of coatings, the surface may require temporary protection against corrosion.

Preparation for Qualisteelcoat coating application:

After the blasting process is completed, the surface is ready for further preparation stages for applying coatings in accordance with the Qualisteelcoat system requirements. This process may include:

Primer application: Special anti-corrosion primers are used to ensure optimal adhesion of subsequent coating layers.
Subsequent coating layers: Layers of paints, varnishes, or other protective and decorative coatings may be applied to the primer, in accordance with the requirements of the Qualisteelcoat system.

Advantages of abrasive blasting:

Effective removal of contaminants: The process is very effective in removing all contaminants, rust, and old coatings.
Improved adhesion: The cleaned and roughened surface provides better adhesion for new coatings.
Surface uniformity: The ability to obtain a uniform surface texture over large areas.

Summary:

Sandblasting is a key step in preparing surfaces for the application of coatings compliant with the Qualisteelcoat system. It ensures adequate cleanliness and surface roughness, which is essential for obtaining durable and aesthetic protective coatings.
