How can we design a small playground in a preschool?

Designing a Preschool Playground: Key Considerations

A playground is an incredibly important element of any preschool. It is a place where children can not only play but also develop their motor, social, and cognitive skills. A well-designed playground can significantly impact children's development by providing opportunities for learning through play. When setting up a playground, it is crucial to pay attention to many important factors. Unfortunately, the small spaces that preschools often have to work with require finding ways to maximize the available area. So, what should we focus on? This article aims to provide some guidance.

Safety First

Safety on the playground is an absolute priority. There is no room for compromise—every piece of equipment should be made from durable, non-toxic materials and possess the necessary certifications. Regardless of the size of the space, all equipment should be certified and comply with safety standards. In Poland, specific regulations govern playgrounds, including PN-EN 1176 and PN-EN 1177 standards, which outline the requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of equipment. One of the basic elements of safety is the ground surface. Choosing the right type can significantly affect fall cushioning and reduce the risk of injuries. Commonly used materials include sand, rubber mats, and synthetic grass. Each of these materials has its advantages and disadvantages, so it’s essential to analyze which will be the best fit for a particular playground.

Selecting Age-Appropriate Equipment

When designing a playground in a preschool, it is important to consider the age and developmental needs of the children. Young children aged 3-5 need equipment that helps them develop coordination, balance, and muscle strength. Small slides, climbing frames, tunnels, and climbing walls are excellent choices. Older preschoolers will appreciate more complex equipment, such as obstacle courses or rope structures, which offer greater challenges and play opportunities. It’s essential to include elements suitable for different age groups and skill levels. Equally important is the aesthetics and friendliness of the space. Colorful, visually appealing equipment encourages children to play and spend time outdoors. Decorative elements can also have educational functions, such as boards with letters and numbers that children can learn about while playing. In small spaces, it is worthwhile to consider multifunctional solutions that save room.

Creative Solutions for Limited Space

Even if a preschool has limited space for a playground, there are many ways to create an attractive and functional play area. Opting for multifunctional equipment that combines several activities, such as a slide with a climbing frame and a wall, is a good idea. Swings are a classic element of every playground. In smaller areas, compact models are advisable, such as spring swings or nest swings that can accommodate several children at once. Merry-go-rounds can also be a great addition to the playground, especially if we choose smaller diameter models that do not require much space. Sandboxes are an excellent way to develop children's creativity and fine motor skills. In small spaces, foldable or covered sandboxes can be considered, which can be easily secured after preschool hours.

Attractive Additions and Amenities

To make the preschool playground truly appealing to children, it’s worth considering additional amenities and decorative elements. Colorful activity boards or sensory panels can enrich playtime and stimulate children’s creativity. Benches and tables are also important for children to rest or engage in group activities. Creating a themed area, such as a playhouse or pirate ship, can spark children's imaginations. It’s also important to ensure appropriate shade in parts of the playground, allowing children to comfortably enjoy outdoor time even on hot days.
